  • 1 cup hot reduced fat milk
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ½ tablespoons sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ tablespoons butter
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • Black food coloring
  • Red food coloring

Instructions

  1. Whisk together hot milk and egg yolk in a small bowl; set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and yeast until well combined.
  3. Add the warm milk mixture along with butter and salt; stir into rough dough.
  4. Knead by hand for 10 minutes or using a stand mixer for 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Divide dough into portions; cover and let rest briefly.
  6. Color one portion black and another red using food coloring.
  7. Let dough rise in a warm place until doubled (about 1.5 hours).
  8. Roll each colored dough into rectangles, stack, roll tightly into a loaf shape, and place in a greased pan.
  9. Allow to rise again until doubled (about 1 hour).
  10. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for about 30 minutes until hollow when tapped.
  11. Cool completely before slicing.
